I-35E Stemmons Freeway Construction Update: New Detour Routes

DALLAS — Commuters traveling through downtown Dallas will face additional lane closures and new detour routes along I-35E Stemmons Freeway beginning Monday as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) enters the next phase of its multi-year infrastructure improvement project.

The construction will affect northbound and southbound traffic between the I-30 interchange and the Medical District Drive exit, with work scheduled to continue through late March 2024. TxDOT officials announced that two of the four main lanes in each direction will be closed during peak hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

"We understand this is going to create significant challenges for daily commuters, but these improvements are essential for the long-term safety and efficiency of this critical corridor," said TxDOT Dallas District Engineer Maria Rodriguez during a press conference Tuesday.

Recommended Detour Routes

TxDOT is advising drivers to use several alternative routes during construction hours. Northbound traffic can exit at Commerce Street and follow Lamar Street through downtown, reconnecting with I-35E at Medical District Drive. Southbound commuters should consider using US-75 Central Expressway through Deep Ellum and reconnecting via I-30 westbound.

For drivers traveling between Oak Cliff and North Dallas neighborhoods like Uptown and the Design District, Harry Hines Boulevard provides a viable surface street alternative, though officials warn this route will likely experience increased congestion.

"I've been driving this route to my job in Victory Park for eight years, and it's already a nightmare during rush hour," said Jennifer Martinez, a Duncanville resident who commutes daily through the construction zone. "I'm going to have to leave home 30 minutes earlier just to make sure I'm not late."

Safety Concerns and Preparations

The construction zone has already seen an uptick in minor traffic incidents, with Dallas police reporting a 15% increase in fender-benders along the affected stretch since preliminary work began in October. The combination of reduced lanes, slower speeds, and driver frustration has created conditions that require extra caution.

Local businesses are preparing for potential impacts as well. Faith Low Price Auto Glass, which serves the Dallas-Fort Worth area, reports they've already seen increased demand for windshield repairs from drivers navigating construction debris and road hazards along major highways.

"Construction zones can be tough on vehicles, especially windshields," noted shop manager David Kim. "We always recommend drivers maintain extra following distance and keep their windshields in good condition when traveling through work zones."

Project Timeline and Benefits

The $180 million project aims to modernize aging infrastructure, improve drainage systems, and add smart traffic management technology along the 4.2-mile stretch. Upon completion in late 2025, the improvements are expected to reduce travel times by up to 20% during peak hours and enhance safety features throughout the corridor.
